Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands — The newest resort in the Turks and Caicos Islands has officially opened its doors. Starting today, Salterra Resort & Spa will offer high-end luxury getaways on the quiet island of South Caicos to travelers looking to experience a pristine island relatively untouched by tourism.
Salterra partnered with Visit Turks and Caicos Islands to capture a first look at the resort and the experiences the property will offer — from kayaking in pristine saltwater flats and aquamarine channels to lounging in its idyllic pools — for Travel + Leisure.
The property offers 100 rooms and suites as well as six distinct dining options, several swimming pools, a curated selection of water sports and adventures, and prime beachfront on the expansive Salterra Beach, where it is the only resort.
Salterra is the first property in the Turks and Caicos Islands for The Luxury Collection, Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of properties that offer unique and high-end authentic experiences.
"We are thrilled to introduce Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Turks & Caicos as the latest addition to our expanding global footprint, offering travelers a gateway to South Caicos — a serene, lesser-explored corner of the Caribbean known for its picturesque beauty and rich maritime heritage,” said Bruce Rohr, Vice President and Global Brand Leader of The Luxury Collection.
The resort opening comes a few days before the island will see its first scheduled direct international flight since the 1980s. American Airlines will run a twice weekly flight from Miami to South Caicos (XSC) on Wednesdays and Saturdays starting March 15.
South Caicos is one of the eight major inhabited islands in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory located between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic. The island supports a population of only about 1,139 people, according to the last national census, which was completed in 2012.
South Caicos is currently home to two luxury resorts, including Salterra, and one budget hotel. A former salt-producing island from the country's sea salt industry days, the island’s modern economy primarily relies on a small-scale fishing industry and boutique tourism provided by its luxury properties.
