The Turks and Caicos Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (TCSPCA) is the oldest animal welfare organization in Turks and Caicos. TCSPCA was established in 1998 and offers animal rescue, spay and neuter programs, animal care, and educational programs. The nonprofit is located off Suzy Turn road on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. TCSPCA works to end the problem of stray and homeless animals on the islands by providing free spay and neuter clinics across the islands as well as offering pet adoption and fostering.

Animal Rescue

TCSPCA offers medical assistance and care for animals in distress across the Turks and Caicos islands. Volunteers track down injured and ill animals and transport them to veterinarians for help. When they are in recovery, the stray and neglected animals are placed in loving foster homes or at Pampered Paws dog boarding facilities in Providenciales.

Adoption and Fostering

The animal welfare organization also helps stray pets find homes by placing them in foster homes and putting them up for adoption. TCSPCA relies on volunteers and dedicated pet lovers to provide foster homes while pets await adoption. TCSPCA strives to find good homes for adoptable dogs and cats on the island, and in some cases, adoptions are made to residents of the U.S. and Canada, with transportation assistance for the pets. Before adoption, pets are provided with vaccinations and veterinary services.

In efforts to provide more homes for animals in need, the TCSPCA has international partner organizations that can assist with international adoptions. For pets that are adopted or rescued and sent to the U.S. and Canada, TCSPCA provides vaccinations, a veterinary examination, and a travel certificate. Animals are transported by couriers to the U.S. and Canada.

Spay/Neuter

A large part of the TCSPCA’s programming involves spaying and neutering to reduce the number of strays on the island and curb pet overpopulation. Since 2002, the TCSPCA has provided over 7,000 spay and neuter surgeries to small animals on all of the family islands. The organization offers free spay and neuter services and wellness clinics at public events in Provo, Grand Turk, South Caicos, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, and Salt Cay. The clinics offer free spay and neuter surgeries as well as pet wellness services and education to help pet owners learn about responsible pet ownership.

The TCSPCA also offers trap and neuter services for roaming cats who often take up residence in resorts and hotels. TCSPCA helps control the stray cat population by trapping and neutering the cats before returning them to their regular locations. The animal rescue also can assist with trapping and removing cats from private residences and hotels where the stray cat population has become a problem.

Animal Care and Education

The TCSPCA also holds educational events on pet ownership and pet care to children and local civic organizations. The TCSPCA has a costumed mascot called “Lucky the Potcake,” who attends children’s events to show kids how to care for and handle dogs. TCSPCA also teaches children how to approach animals and who to call if they see an animal in distress or in need.
