National Environmental Centre

This display at the Environmental Center illustrates the deep ocean passage that separates the Turks Islands group from the Caicos Islands.

Found adjacent to the central Children’s Park Bight Beach access, the National Environmental Centre features an exhibition hall on subjects of natural and cultural interest to the Turks and Caicos.

The leading feature in the gallery is a scale elevation model of the underwater plateau that supports the Turks and Caicos Islands. This fastening display highlights the difference between the Turks Islands and the Caicos Islands, and the Columbus Passage that separates them.

There’s typically a member of staff around to offer tours or tourism information.

Although not extensive, the attraction is centrally located and there’s no entrance fee, so it’s worth a quick visit. The environmental center is located within a short drive of the snorkeling sites of the Bight Reef and Smith’s Reef.

Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs

The upper level of the National Environmental Centre houses the offices of the Governmental Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA). This department oversees the natural resources, marine regions, fisheries, and protected areas in the Turks and Caicos.

DEMA is responsible for issuing any required licenses for recreational use of marine and protected areas, fishing, yacht and vessel anchoring, camping, and the export of conch shells and certain marine products.

Fishing Licenses

In the case of local fishing tours or charters, necessary fishing licenses are typically provided by the local business. However, if you plan to DIY fish, the responsibility for following laws, obtaining licenses, and avoiding protected areas is your concern.

Daily ($10) and monthly ($30) fishing licenses are available.
